I'm no expert but, assuming the engine has been maintained at the regular
suggested intervals and that there has been no catastrophic failures of
engine components that might adversily affect the engine (i.e. water pump
failure and the following severe engine overheating), I beleive that todays
engines will last at least
+300,000 miles if the above is true. Otherwise 125,000-200,000 miles is more
realistic. Todays metallurgy allows engines to last much longer. However
since my current project (80 Westy) I believe that the German engineers were
way ahead of their time with the 2.0L engine. And therefore I am sold on VW
in comparison to american vehicles.
