I just removed an A/C system from my '85 parts van for a customer.  I would
suggest that if you are getting a system from a junkyard, etc. that you
insist on either pulling it yourself, or getting a mechanic friend to pull it
for you.  You will need to drop the gas tank to get the wiring harness for
the A/C out intact and you will also need to remove the radiator to get to
the Condensor.  It took me about 4 hours total to get everything out in one
piece.  I then went through the connectors and wrote down the colors of the
wires and where each one hooked into.  That way when the customer goes to
install it (going into a Crew Cab Vanagon) he will at least have an idea of
what to hook the harness to.
The nice part about the A/C systems on the early Vanagons is that they are
definately installed after the van is built (an add on) so everything
unplugs from the main harness with no cutting and it all comes out as a unit.
