Knowing what I know now, I would buy a Westy Vanagon, any year, that had a blown engine. It must have a good core. I would try to get it cheap, and put in a reliable rebuild. Condition of interior, tranny, and rust would figure into it prominently. If I got it priced right, I would feel better about that vehicle than one with an mystery engine in it.

Jeez, be good to the guy. What dedication! What persistence! I stand [well, actually, sit] in awe of his single-mindedness. I just bought the first one I actually saw. And I used to make my living as an analyst.

Besides all the questions he has, I had too, but was to dumb to ask.
