I recently purchased a '90 Vanagon Carat to replace my '85 GL.  It has the KYB
shocks, and they make the same noise (sounds like it's going to break a ball
joint!)  Of course, handling is 100% better than my old '85, less body roll
and the wider tires help immensely as well.
