On my 87 Syncro, I could easily get the spring out when the shock is removed. Just press the arm downwards, step on it or similar and the spring should fall out. The bottom have to come out first. I had to use spring clamps to get it in the springs after I put in a 1" shim on top.

You should not have to mess with the axles.
