As for the light - my '85 did this until I replaced the oil sender (remember, pre-86 only has one, not two senders). It appears that somehow the wrong sender had been installed, and though when new it didn't light up, it would light up continuously below 2000 rpm (scared me silly). Putting correct one in solved the problem entirely Just my 2cents.....
