1991 Volkswagen Vanagon 2.1 L
Trans: Automatic

Fuel: Digifant I
Misc Data: van
Symptoms: Poor Idle Quality, Poor Fuel Economy
Occurs: Always

Thanks for the several very good responses. what was
concluded on the scope pattern was that vanagons have a
multi trigger pulse ignition pattern due to their unique
control module. spark patterns look very unusual, but
normal for vanagons. with out your help i would have been
chasing a ghost! On the fuel economy end; I found a sticky
idle switch. throtle body was carboned up, and shaft was
binding causing an open switch. Van runs great now, time
will tell for sure on the improved fuel economy. Better yet
if the price of gas ever goes down!

Hello! I use the ocsiloscope all the time to test ignition
systems and to look at the pattern on the screen. I have
only looked at two vanagon patterns and the were both
different than any other car I've seen. I'm begining to
think that this might be a vanagon only problem. Maybe some
of you VW guys have run in to this alot. my firing lines
are close to 20KV and they are very erradic.Spark lines
don't look good eather. I don't really have an idling nor
preformance problem, but gas mileage is said to be very
poor. Has anyone seen goofy scope patterns on Vanagons?
