I went for a ride in Robs vanagon yesterday and was impressed and encouraged,(I am going to do a I-4 transplant soon). I know that the conventional wisdom says that the 16 valve is not the engine to use for conversions but this is the second 16 valve that I have seen Rob use and this one is a 2.0 16v from a Passat.Rob used the engine because he got it for free so no harm no foul! At worst it is no worse on the bottom end than a Wasserboxer engine and at best it really moves the van when it hits the powerband. It was great to ride in the van and for a change have the van feel and sound as if there is a real engine motivating the van. This thing flat out moves.I would encourage any midwest listers who are thinking about doing a conversion to try to hook up with Rob to check this out first hand. The most expensive thing about his conversion is the Kennedy plate. .One of the coolest things is the method by which Rob mounts the engine in the van. I won't try to describe it but will say to ask Rob himself.
