Brent; This reminded me of a similar, cross country, rear cylinder melt down in the middle of nowhere failure twenty years ago. After driving about fifty miles I realized the emergency brake was on slightly(Kombi Zombie syndrome) ;-/. The tremendous heat cooked the seals in one cylinder and it was now leaking. No one in the little town could even spell VW so I knew parts would be hard to come by. As a temporary fix I purchased a 10¢ hose clamp and used it to pinch off the rubber hose going to the offending wheel. No more leak! It got me over the Rockies and back to Louisville with no appreciable loss of performance. I thought it would pull terribly to one side but I really could not tell the difference.
