I don't have one of the niffty plastic covers on mine, which I found somewhat worrisome. I did however have a surplus of mouse pads, which I've cut up to make insulators both in the battery compartment and on my stereo which keep shorting out. They are thinner than the plastic caps, and I think as good for insulating. They also make pads to protect the knee of your khaki pants when your begins making strange noises on the way to a meeting.
