There is a filter screen in the tank, but there's no easy way to check or change it. First thing is to ascertain if you indeed have a fuel delivery problem. First thing I would do would be to check pressure while the symptom is occurring. Fuel pressure should be 30-40 psi (higher under load). You need a fuel pressure gauge (any pressure gauge that will measure 0-60 psi will do, if you can get it securely attached via some 7mm fuel hose to the test fitting below the pressure regulator. This is just in front of the ignition distributor...)

CAUTIONARY TALE: Does this happen with a full tank of gas? Does it seem to run out of fuel before it should? We once had a weird problem like this and found that the fuel line inside the tank that delivers fuel from the pickup in the center of the tank to the outlet at the right rear had come off at the outlet fitting. It made the van "run out of gas" when it still had a quarter tank in it. Most exasperating! Someone probably blew air into the tank under pressure, thinking to clear the line, and blew it off instead. Imagine their delight when they figures they had solved the problem (the line was certainly clear, then), and their dismay when the van repeatedly ran out of fuel such a long way from the next gas station...
