A couple of weeks ago I posted a message asking for help with my '80 westy that topped out at about 40 miles an hour. It also would start to lurch and buck at high RPMs.

Several of you gave me suggestions (which have improved the performance) but it took a little luck for me to find out what it was.

While testing the fuel pressure I noticed it would drop at Higher RPMs and decided to check the fuel pump delivery rate. It was about 1/10th what Bentley says it should have been. I had already changed the fuel filter so I knew that wasn't it.

The problem turned out to be crap plugging up the fuel line coming out of the tank. Running a wire through the tank outlet cleared the problem right up. I know I should have checked it already but I never said I was smart. Now I need to replace the tank or seal it. What do you suggest?

Those of you who e-mailed with similar problems might want to start with the checking the fuel pump's delivery rate.

Anyway, my vans runs and I'm as high as a kite.

Gary (One happy van owner)
