The poptop on my westy was coated with something when I bought it, and I never could figure out what it was, but a year or two later it started the chalky, white road trip. For several years, I used a cleaner sold at a local marina for boat gel-coat finishes and a hard carnuba wax. Very time consuming and I'd have no arms for a couple days after. Then just a couple years ago, a Makita power buffer (I can hear the "Tool Man" in the background) came into my modest garage, and part of the regime is taking care of the poptop twice yearly with the spring and fall wax jobs. Same compounds as for the metal finish, and seems to be just fine. The carnuba wax did last longer, but with the buffer, it only takes a couple hours to do the top, mostly due to moving the ladder so often.
