It's hydrogen gas. Non poisionous, but potentially explosive in a confined area such as the interior of the battery case when mixed with proper amount of O2. Outside of the case it will rapidly dissipate (Very low density so rises rapidly) so little change of explosion with the quantity generated in a battery.
