Steve, I don't know what would be normal for your 84 Westy. But I had a water faucet fail on my 90 Westy Syncro. After installing a new on I decided to tear apart the old one to see how it works. I forget the exact details of the structure, but it was built such that when you turn the faucet handle one way and the pump was on, the inlet connected to the tubing coming from the city water hook up was blocked such that no pressure was put on it from the pump. And when the faucet was turned the other way the city water could flow, but not into the water holding tank.

Personally I would never hook up my city water connection... I'm afraid the pressure would blow one of the pipes behind the fridge... what a mess that would be... especially if I were out on a 3 or 4 hour hike!
