Thanks for responding. It's a pretty unusual sound.
Does yours also sound like a cow mooing?
In my case, I heard the sound when the vanagon
was sitting overnight and temp was 35-40 fahrenheit.
I already suspected a bearing.
I was hoping that I might be too pessimistic.
Always took good care of the engine, oil change, etc,
so it comes a bit as a surprise.
At first, I thought it was the air flow meter flap
or something in the air intake vibrating.
But after checking everything, that's not where it's
coming from. It's interesting that you mention a bearing
could make that sound. I always imagined a bearing
sounding more screechy when it goes.
Matter of fact I just made an appointment to replace
the head gaskets, so maybe while the engine is out,
I will have the bottom end checked out too.
