Subject: Interference problem where exhaust passes over engine bracket (84
              wasser)

Volks, I've tracked down a rattle that's been driving me nuts. I was thinking motor mounts, but it was instead an exhaust problem. I have a rattle caused by insufficient clearance where the exhaust coming off the left head passes over the whatchamacallit-engine-hanger-thingy. (You know the brace that runs behind the engine- braces the engine via motor mounts to the bus.)

A short piece of wood from a paint stir fits, but of course falls out in a few miles of driving.

Hate to take the hammer to my new (probably made in China) exhaust manifold.

A thoughts of how stick something (wood, rubber, etc.) in there and make it stay? Someone else said use a worm clamp to do the opposite-- hold the exhaust against the engine bracket. Seemed like a bad idea as the engine and body move independently...

TIA Thanks In Advance or Temporary Ischemic Accident (why I bought a vanagon!), herr Kaptain
