Richard:

The only noise that the fridge makes, regardless of the method of operation is the cooling fan mounted to the back of the fridge. It is only engaged when a thermistor on the condenser coil hits 120 degrees F (I believe that's the number). In cool weather, this fan often never engages.

Other than that, you may hear faint gurgling noises, but these are usually only audible in the dead of night when you are sleeping and can also hear the frogs croaking in the creekbed 100 yards away. :-)

Also, any method takes several hours to cool the fridge. I always plug into 120v the night before leaving on a trip, then switch over to 12v for the drive. This also makes it much easier to light on propane, BTW, since the vent stack is already warmed up and air is flowing through the combustion chamber via convection.
