Hmmm... If the interior is in good shape, and the suspension and brakes are in good order, it may be a good candidate for an engine swap! (Pick your choice: Audi 5 cyl, 2.0 GTi, 16v Jetta, or Subaru)

Is there any features of the later models that would be important to you (i.e. power steering, windows, AC, etc)?
