ok, it's not quite Friday yet... but I think this practice was stoppped after the 1986 movie "The Hitcher" http://www.suntimes.com/ebert/ebert_reviews/1986/02/44499.html

sorry, I always think of this movie when the topic of cross-country transport comes up.
