Josh; Does you Vanagon have the typical "saggy butt?" If so, your problem may be old springs causing the suspension to bottom out when you hit a bump. If its not too bad you could throw in an Air Lift kit (http://www.suspension.com/airliftvw.htm) for about $90. Reading the instructions takes longer than the installation. The air bags will prevent bottoming out unless the van is grossly overloaded. They can be inflated independently to compensate for an unbalanced load (or springs). I put a set in my '85 Wolfsburg Weekender a few weeks ago. The ride is firmer without being harsh and swaying is greatly reduced. I can also see farther behind in the rearview!
