In a message dated 00-04-04 18:33:47 EDT, you write: << Has anyone heard of something that is attached to heads which indicate if it was exposed to excessive heat >> I bought an aircooled 2000 cc engine from AVP in Sacremento last year. While I was in the shop, I noticed the rebuilder grinding a place off on the heads and gluing two metal things on each one. When I asked what they were, he said that they were heat tags. Said he couldn't be in business without them. Its how they tell if an engine was abused or not set up properly. Apparently they consist of a steel outer piece and a lead-or-some-other-metal center. If the engine is heated to over 400 degrees, I believe he said, the center melts and runs out. Tom '71, '78 and '85 Westys |
