Subject: Contemplating a water-cooled van...
Content-Type: multipart/mixed;
Hi. I'm new to the list, but I also subscribe to a Porsche 914 list, so
I hope my "netiquette" is correct.
I currently own an '82 Vanagon Adventurewagon with a Mark Stephens 2.1L
aircooled engine. The vehicle runs great, has decent power, and I
generally have few complaints. This vehicle has seen Alaska in its
travels, and makes a really nice "home away from home", as well as an
occasional pickup truck.
However, I am considering selling this and buying a water-cooled van,
preferably in the '86 - 91 2.1L vintage. I am looking for a full
Westfalia or Camper GL. I am mainly attracted to the water-cooled
engine's increased power, economy and gas mileage over the air-cooled. I
also think the water-cooled would be a lot easier to work on without all
the cooling sheet metal.
I am aware of the head gasket issue with the water boxer, and I would
not be averse to rebuilding the motor later on if I could find an
otherwise well cared-for camper. I have also heard that the 3rd/4th gear
change is a weak point in the transmissions. I am not really interested
in a Synchro unless I found a really good deal, because of the added
weight and complexity and possibility for expensive repairs.
My questions to the list: (some might appear dumb, but I only know my
Adventurewagon)
1) What are the other problem areas of the late Vanagons? FI, electrical
gremlins, power steering, etc?
2) How many miles can I expect out of the engine, either from new or
after a rebuild, assuming the headgasket continues to be the weak design
element?
3) Was a limited-slip differential available only on Synchros, or was
this optional on 2WD vans?
4) Is air-conditioning available on the full campers, and if so, how is
it arranged inside the camper (where are the outlets)?
5) Is the sunroof in the roof of the cab on a Westfailia?
6) Lastly, how much should I consider paying for a late-model Westfalia,
and how much should I ask for my Adventurewagon?
Thanks in advance!
