Greetings!

I have a question, spurred on in part due to last week's discussion about "chirping" as a symptom of failing water pump or alternator.

I have noticed that my highway running temp has lowered a full "needle width" on the guage and takes longer to get up to operating temperature. I have not done anything to the engine except oil change two weeks ago. Similarly, I have noticed an increase in the "chirping" from the engine. I am likely reaching for a problem when in fact I might not have one, however, could this decrease in running temperature be a sign of impending problem?

Where is the temp that reads on the dash actually measured - in the radiator or in the block? - if in the rad, could the lowered temp reading indicate a slower cycling of coolant due to dying pump? slower cycling of coolant= more time for cooling in the rad, therefore lower temp (my reasoning - likely to get burned with this one!)

Are there warning signs, outside of "chirping" that is suggestive of failing water pump?
