From my experience, the problem seems to be with who does the cleaning up. I recently had a pair of rotors cut at an Autozone. Since this store opened less than a year ago, I figured they must have a new brake lathe with which to do a workmanlike job. When I measured the cut rotors, I found them to be tapered .008" across the width of the pad sweep area and so, obviously, unusable. How this can be done with any brake lathe I have ever seen escapes me.

If it had not been a Saturday, I would have taken them to the oldest brake shop in town called City Brake, no less. This shop has been around so long that they even know what you mean when you ask them to radius the shoes to match the drums. The rotors they have done for me always measure right on the nuts and, more importantly, they do not pulsate.

But all this talk of cutting rotors may be moot. The cost of them has come down so much that it is becoming hard to justify resurfacing them. I have been getting Brembo rotors from a local shop at $40 each for a Syncro and $30 each for a Volvo.

You pays your money and you takes your choice. Rich
