There are no such thing as a tire built especially for the Vanagon only! There
are plenty of other vans that use the 185R14 dimension, this dimension was
created by several of the big car manufacturers together with several of the big
car manufacturers beck in the early 60s. They created a standard, to keep
production costs down in all parts of the chain. Among the carmanufacturers were
Volkswagen, Ford (Europe), Peugeot, Renault and Fiat.


So, yes the 185R14 is a dime a dozen, but not in the US. On my 2 vans, I have
run on 4 different brands of 185s, and I have been happy with them all.
