For what its worth, my 84 westy 3-4 gear hub calved @approx 100 000 miles. Had it re-built a year ago, so far so good.

I understand that a flaw exists in a specific part of the vanagon tranny between 3rd and 4th gears. Could anyone give me advice on about what mileage this part malfunctions.
