In addition to everything else others have mentioned, the curved rods above the spare tire that hold it in position when the pan is up need to be removed, I don't think I had to remove the pan last time I did this.

Any advice would be appreciated. Also, where does > one buy the "special" antifreeze?

The "special" Autobahn brand antifreeze is a dealer item for about $15/gal, some VW specialty FLAPS may also stock it. I now use Texaco Dexcool long life antifreeze, good for five years or 50,000 miles and $8/gal. Phosphate free as required by VW. Your choice.
