I don't know about vanagons but at 60,000 miles on our 95 Eurovan I had a mechanic replace timing belt, serpentine belt, drain/change/refill coolant system, replace fuel filter, thermostat and several other maintenance items. Total bill was around 900 bucks. I would rather pay this price than get stuck out in the middle of nowhere. Follow your manuals suggested maintenence schedule, some things you can let go a little longer than others but I wouldn't mess around with letting the cooling system, lubrication system or timing belts go to much longer than what is suggested. Your engine will take care of you if you take care of it.
