Been there, done that. A pop-top conversion is not as difficult as it seems. I have done several VW campers because I prefer my own layout like the full width bed in the back, the hanging rear cabinet that actually has some space because the roof curve is still there, the extra length bed, side windows in the canvas, etc. It can be done without welding. It is mostly wood work. Total completion in a weekend is a bit ambitious though.
