I don't think most campgrounds would be happy if you just let your gray water dump on the ground. Of course this likely differs from location to location. Small food particles attract critters and insects and the next camper that comes along may not appreciate the mess you leave behind.

I have not installed a tank on my '74 Campmobile as I haven't found one that was small enough and would still fit where I wanted to put it. On my '93 EV MV, The gray water tank is built into the cabinet where the sink drains directly into it. The tank is strapped to the back of the cabinet and sits on a shelf just below the water tank. These tanks are both the same size and you dump one when you fill the other. See my What's New page on the website for more info on this setup.

The Vanagon tank was designed for the Vanagon, and at 5 gallons is just the right size. It holds about as much as your water tank does, and if you empty one and fill the other at the same time you will be in good shape.

I use a bucket for now on my 74, but have plans to install a tank as soon as I find the correct size. I don't need anything larger than the Vanagon tank, and yet that tank won't fit on my '74.

Yes, the Vanagon tanks are a bit expensive, and a bucket will work just as well, but the tanks are a cool accessory and I wouldn't offer them if folks didn't want to buy them.
