Frank; Oh man did I blow this one!! I forgot to mention the dreaded VW starter bushing! You have to forgive us left brain people, always jumping on the complex solution. If your starter bushing (located in the transmission bell housing) is worn it will cause lots of binding and hence,over-current problems.
