Subject: suppressing electrical noise
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

further to the recent thread on grounds, etc., I've had tons o' problems with eletrical noise coming through my radio, tape deck, & amp. It's coming thru direct connections to the battery, take-offs from the cigarette lighter, & wiring from the fuse box (ie, everywhere). I'm pretty sure that most of the noise is coming in thru the power supply and not through the ether because I have a portable cd I plug into the stereo... if i power from car, there's background noise, but if i power from AA batteries, it's clean.

Anyway, are there any basic steps to take to suppress electrical noise in a Vanagon?

- OR -

Can a cheap, effective electrical filter be purchased for the radio/tape/cd player that actually works? (thereby bypassing all the work & mysticism maybe associated with actually trying to fix the problem)

(corollary: Can a cheap filter be purchased for the power amp? I guess 100 watts or so, where the head unit with its smaller amp is maybe less than 10 watts)

- OR -

Is it easy to fabricate effective filters? (it's occurred to me to try using power filter circuitry from an old PC power supply, but no idea if this would work)

Whew, that's a bunch of questions...
