Stuart, I certainly agree that there should be no potential difference between the case halves but, what about the potential difference between the left (grounded) head and the case? There are numerous things that tend to isolate the case halves from the head. That big rubber gummy for one; the sealants and oxides at the interface of the head and head nuts for another. So, maybe we all should be installing grounding bonds between the lower cases and the heads. What do you think?

As an aside, I once braided my own grounding strap from stripped 14 AWG SO cord. It was on a Sunday before we had such things as 7 day-a-week supply houses. I used a plaiting as sailors do with rope. I formed the lugs out of sheet Cu and used soft silver solder. When it was finished, it probably was better than factory because I didn't mind using an extra 10 cents worth of Cu.
