Subject: Cooling system
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

I'm putting a basket case back together, and I have the option of installing a complete cooling system hookup, that is, water pump, all accessory fittings, hoses, etc. for either a pre or post '86 style system. It really looks to me as if the early system has fewer small pieces, and/or fittings, whether plastic or metal. This makes me question whether to install the later style system. I especially don't like the sealing for the temperature sensor that runs the injection in the later system, with its o-ring and retaining ring/spring clip.

I'm wondering just what improvements the later system were supposed to have made over the earlier system. Who can expound on this for the group.

I run both types in my vehicles, and have never experienced any real difference in on the road performance.

For that matter, is the later fuel injection really better? Experience would suggest that the earlier units run cooler, and with fewer breakdowns. I believe some European 2.1 engines came with the earlier system. I think Per Lindgren has one like this, and has said the performance is great. Not having the ignition mapped on a chip isn't such a bad thing. The 2.1 engine has more trouble with "pinging" in the real world, I believe, than the 1.9. Hmmmm.
