Hello I am replacing the gear oil in a used tranny I bought prior to installation. At the parts store I noticed there is a 85/140 gear oil available in addition to the 80W and 80/90W. I believe the 85/140 gear oil is Valvoline synthetic or semi-synthetic. Is this a new weight/type of gear oil that would be suitable for use in the Vanagon transmission or should I stick with the 80/90? When I pulled the drain plug there was a fair amount of metal filings attached to the drain plug magnet. Is this common on a tranny that hasn't had the fluid changed for 100K miles or more.. or is this a really bad sign? Thanks Gary Gary McEachern, Reading Ma.
