I had one of these on my vanagon when I bought it. The only effect it
seems to have had on the rust was an extra amount of rust where the "pads"
were glued on to the body. Plus the annoying blinking LED in the interior
while trying to enjoy a star-lit night was an added bonus. If you want
mine, I'll make you a great deal :-)

I used to work in the "music touring" business. Endorsements are often
bought, not earned. If you wash your vehicle with fresh water every night
you should be able to get 10 years out of it. Forget to wash it a few
times and the rust starts. There have been a few explanations as to why
this is a great theory and doesn't work in reality but I'll leave that to
the EEs.
Son: "what is the difference between theory and reality?"
Father: "hmm.. let's try something. Ask your mother and your sister if
they would sleep with a stranger for $2,000,000"
Son asks both mother and sister the question and they told him:
Sister: "well, I've never been with a man before, but to think of all the
good that I could do with the money, I guess I would"
Mother: "I've been faithful to your father since we've met, and really
can't imagine this ever coming up, but considering that we would never be a
burden on you kids, plus we wouldn't have to worry about affording college
for you kids.. yes I would"
The son tells this to his father who replies:
"See son, there you go. In theory we're sitting on $4,000,000. But in
reality we're living with a couple of sluts."
My apologies for any offense.
