Subject: A few questions about 87 passenger bus
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii
I just bought an 87 van from a local guy who had tried to sell it
and was then going to part it out. I got it because it was cheap
($400) and I figured I could drive it around town to keep mileage on
my 89 Westy down and have it as spares in case I lost a tranny or
whatever on the camper. It's got an exhaust leak at the front pipe's
flange to the collector. I'm going to remove the pipe and see if a
buddy can weld it together so it's still usable. I want to put
minimum $ into this one. The AC doesn't work - I haven't checked to
see what's up with that yet. I can see a few things right away that
will be traded between the 87 and 89 - pedal rubber, drivers electric
mirror.
Anyway, what I noticed is that at the rear inside bottoms of the
front doors, where the 89 has what seems to be dummy louver vents,
the 87 has what seems to be functional vents - they have a little
sliding handle. The 89 has these ducts holes that go from front of
door to back and then a hole in the door frame - I never knew why
they were there, but assumed they were something to duct fresh air to
engine compartment for combustion along with the ducts at the upper
rear. But it seems as though the 87 also ducts the same air to the
cabin at driver and passenger's hips ?? I looked in the 87 owners
manual and couldn't find any mention of these louvers. Any ideas ?
Search in archives just comes up with vent windows.
Also, the van came with a 'Supplement to VW Owner's Manual - Vanagon
"Wolfsburg Edition" '. This van does not have the table or rear
facing jump seats. It has the two bench seats of the 7-passenger
bus. And no Wolfsburg emblem anywhere. Did these just automatically
get tossed in at the dealer and the PO never tossed it out ? Or do
I (doubtfully) have some economy model Wolfy ? Anyone with an 87
Wolfy who's missing the manual who would like this one ?
Another thing - the Wolfsburg manual shows built-in cupholders that
fold. They look like one in my 89 mounted on the rear of the stove
cabinet which is broken. Nothing in the Westy manual shows these.
Was it a PO addition to the Westy ? I want to replace it since the
screw holes are already there. Any good source for these ?
