As Tom mentioned, you will need to also do the heat exchangers. This also means you will need to use all the 77 original tin around the back side of the engine since the plumbing into the heater boxes is different as well. Also, the alternator/heater fan setup in the Vanagon is different, you will need to keep all the 77 stuff for that. I also know that the Vanagon had a little pipe (breather tube?) sticking up at the right rear corner of the block and the pre 79 buses had something that bolted on here.
