I have had my '86 for two years. When I got it it had 63,000 original miles. I have added another 20K in two years. I have made several short camping trips and two long distance ones. Had no breakdowns at all. The only repairs have been the usual upkeep- tires, brakes, muffler, something that burned out in the steering column that made the horn beep intermittently, especially when I turned the turn signal on and turned the steering wheel. One other problem not fully resolved is the chattering clutch recently referred to on this list. It started after I had a new clutch put in. Thanks for the postings on it recently. I'll be taking them to my mechanic- a vanagon owner and lover himself. I was warned by the mechanic who checked the van out before I bought it that it was a high maintenance vehicle, costing about the same as it would if I owned a Porsche. I decided to buy it anyway- he told me it was in great shape. I haven't regretted it a moment. Just wish I had air conditioning. Marie '86 Westy |
