i've had my 84 vanagon for 3 years and put 2,000 miles on it for those 3 years it was in the shop or sitting in my driveway leaking oil and other bodily fluids... not that any of that was the van's fault.. i just had the good sense to put a chevy v-6 in it without having the proper tools at first and then killing tranny after tranny whilst smoking wayward(and unsuspecting) 911's on rts. 695 and 83 in maryland. before that however, my mom was the primary driver of the vehicle and the only thing she had to do other than change the oil and other normal upkeep, the first engine got tired at 100,xxx miles and the second engine got tired at 209,xxx miles. there were some hot starting problems when i inherited the van, but they were removed with the engine. and the van has gone from maine to key west a couple of times without fanfare.
