I think he just liked the fumes...they very carefully build those tanks so you *can't* fill them. In the case of the Vanagon the "can't fill" part is the plastic saddle tanks. <g>

It's true that some cars are a lot easier to fill to the limit point than others. I've never had any trouble with the '84 V'gon, either with its big European filler tube or with the restricted one (that only takes unleaded or diesel nozzles...) that I eventually put on over here.
