Subject: Extra storage (for all vanagons) WAS: Lockable Cover for the
              Westy...
Content-Type: text/plain

Hi all,

I've had an idea for extra storage for a while now, and even though I haven't built this yet, I think it could be done reasonably easily.

The idea is to utilize the space between the frame rail and the outer (lower) edge of the body by making a cover that is hinged at the bottom edge of the frame rail and latches under the sliding door. The cover could be made of sheet metal or aluminum, and the latch could be the same type used on the outer compartments of utility (e.g. electric company) trucks. Once you see one you'll know what I mean. I have seen them with or without locks.

In a non Westie, one could be built on both sides.

The compartment would be moderately sized, but could get jacks, tents, spare parts, tools, possibly even a small grill out of the interior storage space.

This doesn't speak directly to the spare tire problem, but may allow a rear hitch mounted box to be jettisoned in favor of a rear spare tire mount.

The security of the design depends on exactly how it is executed, but it does have the advantage of being a stealthy installation. Painted flat black or dark grey, it probably won't be noticed by the majority of passers-by.

Those of you who really bash around your syncros may want to think twice about this, and for goodness sake, don't keep your hi-lift or any other recovery tools down there! <g>

Hope this helps someone.
