No -- if you have access to the magic VW adjustable resistor (VW 1301)
which is calibrated in some magic unit that is *not* ohms , at a dial
setting of 50 on the VW1301 the needle should rest at the top of the red,
which they consider "empty;" with a setting of 320 it should rest at the
bottom of the top black mark.  +/- 1 needle width in each case.

I stupidly thought the units were ohms, and spent 5 minutes getting my
gauge (it has two mechanical adjustments) into a state that took several
hours to get back out of.

How all this relates to actual fuel level I don't know.  Mine goes above
the top mark when actually full, and below the bottom one before it runs out.
