I do the same thing as your ex and am going on 29 years married. I usually run the gas in at full force until it shuts off the first time and then go slow till it starts to run out the filler. I can get three more gallons in the Dodge mini-van that way, less in a Vanagon. If I don't fill it up this way, the number of miles I get per tank varies widely, based on how the sensitive the shutoffs for the nozzles are. This process takes a bit more time, but helps extend the time between fillups, which is often too short.
