I'm no mechanic, but I recently had a similar experience on my '85 Westy. The longer I drove it, the worse it ran -- rough idle, finally black smoke. Turn it off and it was OK...for a while. Discovered the oxygen sensor on the exhaust manifold was stuck...telling the computer to run richer all the time. Good luck.
