re: Does anyone out there have a recommendation for an oil cooler for my 82 Westy? Is there a better brand to get? Is there a prime location to install it? I am also assuming that this is just a smart addition to make, is that right?

First of all, your '82 already has an oil cooler, given my assumption it's pretty unlikely someone has removed the one it came from the factory with. I should think that unless your vehicle sees extremely hard use, you're fine. Even then (extremely hard use), just changing oil more often might be enough. Synthetic oil helps in hard use conditions as well. I'd be surprised if there is independent, credible data supporting installation of auxiliary coolers.
