I had really good luck going to the junkyard. There was a vanagon laying on it's frame, but the bolt was still on it. Remember - everything on these vans is metric. You will have to find a large metric bolt to do the replacement. Go to a hardware store and grab some 10,12,13,14,15 etc mm bolts (bolt width, not head size) that are about 3" long, take them out to your van, see what fits, then return the rest. they may even let you check them without buying....

I'll probably get flamed by the list, but I would recommend taking the shock off if you are going to be doing any driving in it without the bolt. The loose shock can bang the hell out of it's housing, causing you not only to replace the bolt, but possibly having to get a new top bracket welded on. It won;t hurt it to go without the shock for a while - not any more than to have it flapping loose.

Mark currently replacing control arm bushings, tie rods, wheel bearings, rebuilding calipers, replacing ball joints, and cleaning a lot of grease off my hands from the SCIROCCO!
