I've had my '82 Adventurewagen for almost 13 years now, and, except for needing three successive engines, it has been trouble free.

Actually, a while back, I made it to Alaska and back (10,000 miles round trip) with only two flat tires as my mechanical issues. Then, later, when I ceased using the camper for long trips and started using it as daily transportation, it truly put the "adventure" in "Adventurewagen" by going through a series of engine "challenges" (burned a piston, twice, in two different engines) which led me to finally install its current 2.1 liter unit. Now it runs great, and I am taking this as an omen to get out while the gettin's good.

The Adventurewagen will be up for sale soon, as I will be acquiring an '87 Wesfalia, which may usher in a whole new set of love/hate experiences. But I have to say, if taken care of and operated within their design limits, the older Vanagons are quite robust vehicles.

...Dan
