Subject: gasoline!!! :)

well, someone asked me whether or not to leave the air space at the top of a container full of gasoline ... that is, is it better to fill it completely up (leaving NO air space at all) or to leave a few inches of air. i'd always been taught (and found it true from experience) that you always left inches of air for expansion ... that liquid gasoline expands a LOT when it is warmed up.

but i'm not always right. ;) so i decided to go looking for something to back me up ... check out the following:

http://www.shrinershq.org/Prevention/BurnTips/gasoline.html

http://www.api.org/consumer/handlefuel.htm

http://www.chevron.com/prodserv/bulletin/product_safety.html (way down in Filling Procedure)

anyway, you get the idea: gasoline is powerful stuff, and can be VERY dangerous if not handled properly. like a lot of other stuff in our modern lives, we tend to take it for granted (like 4000 lb machines that travel at 88 feet per second!). so be careful out there. ;)

unca joel
